THE BIVOLINO GUIDE

Fabric guide

Poplin, Oxford, twill or linen: choose the feel and style you enjoy wearing.

Compare at a glance

Poplin, Oxford and twill are weaves. Linen is a fibre. Feel also varies with weight, composition and finish: these guidelines do not replace each fabric’s specifications.

Four fabric families for your shirt
FabricFeelSheernessCareSeason
Poplin ↓Smooth and fine, with a crisp appearance.Lightweight whites may show the skin underneath. Check the fabric’s density.May crease; an easy-care or non-iron finish depends on the specific fabric.Year-round; a lightweight version suits warmer days.
Oxford ↓A visible, textured grain with a generally more substantial feel.Often less sheer than fine poplin, but opacity is not guaranteed for every fabric. Its texture suits a more relaxed appearance. Follow the label for washing and ironing.Versatile, especially between seasons; choose the weight to suit the climate.
Twill ↓A diagonal weave, often supple, with a subtle texture.A dense version is generally more opaque; colour and fabric weight remain important.Care depends on the fibres and finish. Twill does not automatically mean non-iron.Year-round depending on weight, particularly pleasant in cool weather.
Linen ↓A natural texture, cool to the touch, with characteristic irregularities.Light-coloured or loosely woven linen can be sheer. Check the close-ups and composition.Creases are part of its character. Follow the label; ironing while slightly damp makes smoothing easier.Particularly suited to warm days and summer outfits.

Before choosing a white fabric

A photo cannot guarantee opacity. Light, density and colour all play a role. If this matters to you, ask for advice on your chosen fabric or enquire about samples.

Follow the shirt’s care label. Easy-care and non-iron are specific finishes, not properties shared by every fabric in a family.
