Scottish Fabrics: Tartan check shirts are inspired by Scottish kilts with a pattern of intersecting horizontal and vertical lines.
Tartan is a woolen fabric with colored checks, typical of Celtic peoples. Scottish kilts are therefore almost always made from a fabric with a tartan pattern.
In Scotland, tartans have been associated with clans and families since the 19th century. Later, tartans were extended to Scottish institutions, notably following the publication of the book Vestiarium Scoticum by the Allen brothers in 1842.
Kilts are almost always decorated with tartans. Tartan is also called plaid in North America.
