BATISTE

Batiste is a fine cloth made from cotton, wool, polyester, or a blend, and the softest of the lightweight opaque fabrics .

Batiste ORIGINS

Batiste is an opaque fabric that is woven in plain weave. It is named after a 13th-century French linen weaver, Jean Baptiste and the fabric was originally woven in flax. The term ‘batiste’ was used to describe the type of soft lustrous finish that the fabric was given.

Nowadays, although a linen batiste may still be found, the most common batiste fabric is a cotton batiste made from 100% cotton or, more usually, a cotton blend. Occasionally batiste may be made from wool, silk, polyester or viscose, or blends of these.
